The Philosophy of Art
- An understanding of Philosophy is simply a must for the serious artist -
Francis & Edith Schaeffer
Francis & Edith Schaeffer and L'Abri
Francis August Schaeffer (30 January 1912 – 15 May 1984) was an American theologian, philosopher, and artist. He is most famous for his writings and his establishment of the L'Abri community in Switzerland. Opposed to theological modernism, Schaeffer promoted a more historic Protestant faith and a presuppositional approach to Christian apologetics, which he believed would answer the questions of the age. Schaeffer's wife, Edith (Seville) Schaeffer, became a prolific author in her own right. They truly understood both the importance and reality of Christianity but also of the Arts and how the two went together beautifully. Unfortunately many artists do not understand actual Christianity (not church-ianity per se) but most Christians do not understand the arts. Schaeffer often times confronted such questions as: "What makes a work of art Christian?" He was adament that a painting did not need to be of a biblical prophet or of Jesus to be Christian; and often times a painting of Jesus may infact not be Christian? (It all depends on the philosophy behind the art itself as well as the artist. (whether cinema, music, painting, etc.))
Edith Rachel Merritt Schaeffer (née Seville) (November 3, 1914 – March 30, 2013) was a Christian author and co-founder of L'Abri, a Christian organization which hosted a wide array of guests; specifically artists and philosophers of art.
